The comparison of the amount of water needed to produce a kilo of tomatoes in greenhouse cultivation systems without hydroponics and high-tech greenhouse cultivation with hydroponics yield

A series of differences:

  • Greenhouse tomato cultivation without hydroponics: 30 liters per kilo of tomato.
  • Hydroponic cultivation in a high-tech greenhouse with recirculating drains: 4 liters per kilo of tomato.

Thus, it is clear that high-tech hydroponic greenhouse crops with recirculation drainage (such as those presented by Hydroponic Systems ©) consume less water per kilo of tomato.

In addition, among a series of advantages and characteristics that hydroponics provides compared to soil crops, we find the following:

  • It allows to produce crops out of season, to advance or delay them or even when there is still a crop in exploitation (interplanting).
  • Higher production and higher quality at harvest, high nutritional quality, color and firmness.

*Irrigation sectors in a closed circuit that allow the lines to be fed at both ends and favors a more homogeneous nutrition.

*CO2 injection.

*Humidification systems if necessary.

  • In a low-technology hydroponic greenhouse, productions of 30 kg / m2 per year can be obtained, in a higher-technology greenhouse, more than 65 kg / m2 per year can be obtained from the same crop.
  • An optimal circulation of the drains reduces the proliferation of diseases and their contagion between plants of the same line.
  • Savings in fertilizers and phytosanitary products.
  • Maximizes aeration between the substrate bag and drainage flow through the use of a * Spacer © crop separator.
  • Greater cleanliness and hygiene in the finished product.
  • In hydroponic systems crops of hanging gutter it is not necessary to level the ground.
  • Hydroponic crops allow to produce without depending on the soil and therefore on its quality and condition. In this way, we could produce anywhere, enabling production closer to the place of sale and / or consumption. Among the advantages of this we find:

*Possibility of collecting the products at a more optimal point of maturity.

*Potential reduction in costs and pollution due to transport.

Having a piece such as the Spacer © allows an optimal circulation of the drainage under the bags of substrate that it firmly supports, in addition to preventing the roots of the plants from coming into contact with the soil or the humidity of the gutter and transferring or contracting diseases along the crop line. On the other hand, it avoids that the operators need to prune the salient roots thanks to the separation of 6 centimeters existing between the soil / base of the gutter and the bag. In conclusion, we could affirm that hydroponics is a profitable alternative, capable of supplying and producing quality fresh fruit and vegetables anywhere without depending on soil conditions, as long as the crop management and equipment are adequate.
